the doofus principle

You know the type. Tries too hard. Socially awkward. Why, you can tell just by looking at him that he can’t do anything right!

Ah, but look again. Maybe that guy isn’t the problem. Maybe we’ve already decided what we’re going to see, and then – lo and behold – we find “evidence” that “proves” we’re right. Only if we were honest, we’d have to admit that there was also evidence to disprove our notions. Maybe we don’t have that guy figured out after all.

Thus is the idea behind the Doofus Principle. Although written for those in management, the concept can challenge all of us to give others the benefit of the doubt.
