bring it out, bring it out

More than once lately, I have unintentionally hurt someone’s feelings. As an apology, I wrote a little poem to ask them – and the rest of us – to please give the other guy, be it a stranger, a casual acquaintance or even a close friend, the benefit of the doubt and choose to not be insulted.

Bring it Out
by Anne Bristow

Casual friend
Seemed so rude?
Maybe they didn’t mean to.

Bring it out, bring it out
The benefit of the doubt.

Person in line
Being unkind?
Maybe they didn’t mean to.

Bring it out, bring it out
The benefit of the doubt.

Fellow at work
Causing you hurt?
Maybe they didn’t mean to.

Bring it out, bring it out
The benefit of the doubt.

People you know
Bring about woe?
Maybe they didn’t mean to.

Bring it out, bring it out
The benefit of the doubt.

I misspeak,
Can’t seem to mend
Hurt feelings
I did not intend,
To strangers, no,
Nor to a friend,
I truly didn’t mean to.

Next time, please…

Bring it out, bring it out
The benefit of the doubt.
