free, freed, and freedom

Freedom! For it, wars have been fought. To retain it, lives have been given! It is loved! It is cherished! It is something we do not want to lose! We enjoy the fact we live in the “Land of the FREE and the home of the brave” as our national anthem declares! This country was traveled to in order to gain FREEDOM. Our government was established to ensure FREEDOM.

However, today is the focus on that FREEDOM the same?

Some have set their focus on FREEDOM FROM. They seek to gain and retain FREEDOM from persecution, high taxation, religion, etc. Others set their focus on FREEDOM TO. They desire FREEDOM to do their own thing, to have whatever vocation they desire, to be their own boss, to choose their own life-style, whatever they desire, etc. Some do not want to have any limitations dictated. And still others focus on FREEDOM OF. They desire FREEDOM of religion, of expression and speech, etc. And here also is often the desire to have no limitations imposed. The glorious FREEDOM we have in Christ, however, is of a higher nature and greater impact and consequence than what our United States Constitution could ever provide.

Freedom does have its limits. Paul stated…
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only DO NOT USE YOUR FREEDOM AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FLESH, but through love serve one another.” ( Galatians 5:13 ESV)

And Peter stated…
“Live as people who are free, NOT USING YOUR FREEDOM AS A COVER-UP FOR EVIL, but living as servants of God.” ( 1 Peter 2:16 ESV)

We must understand these limitations are for our benefit. Within FREEDOM there is still the need for guidelines. FREEDOM does not eliminate a distinction between right and wrong, though the choice is still there from which to choose. FREEDOM is to be exercised wisely.

The greatest FREEDOM we have is the FREEDOM FROM sin and its consequences. Jesus gave His life to provide that FREEDOM.

Jesus said…
“(35) The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. (36) So IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE, YOU WILL BE FREE INDEED.” ( John 8:35-36 ESV)

And Paul stated…
“(1) There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life HAS SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.” ( Romans 8:1-2 ESV)

And we therefore have FREEDOM TO confidently approach God as Paul encouraged…
“(10) so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. (11) This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, (12) in whom WE HAVE BOLDNESS AND ACCESS WITH CONFIDENCE through our faith in him.” ( Ephesians 3:10-12)

Thank God for the FREEDOM He has made possible! There is no other like it!
