what the Bible says about work

What does the Bible have to say about work? Some may be surprised to find out that there are many thoughts about work, lack of work, and serving. The topic comes right to the forefront in the very beginning … Yes, God gave Adam some things to do from the very beginning. Just like Adam, we all have things to do and work is one of them.

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. (NIV)
~ Proverbs 14:23

…and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, (NIV)

~ Proverbs 16:3

For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
~ 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
~ Proverbs 6:6-8

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
~ Matthew 5:16

One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. (NIV)
~ Proverbs 18:9

So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them? (NIV)
~ Ecclesiastes 3:22

So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.
~ Galatians 6:9 (HCSB)

The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.
~ Proverbs 12:24

The LORD demands fairness in every business deal; he sets the standard.
~ Proverbs 16:11

The sleep of a laborer is sweet…
~ Ecclesiastes 5:12a

Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense. (NIV)
~ Proverbs 12:11

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, (NIV)
~ Colossians 3:23
