choose to believe

Faith isn’t the easiest thing to define. I think that faith is one of the most misunderstood words in Christianity. When people are in difficult situations we tell them, “You just need to have faith,” but often we don’t understand what faith even is. Many people today think that faith just means hoping for something, but for us Christians, faith isn’t just a hope; for us, faith is a choice to have confidence.

Genesis 15:6 – “And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.

Abraham chose to believe the things that the Lord said to him; he chose to have faith.

So then, this is how I define faithFaith is a choice that we make to: 1. Believe that the things God says are completely true and 2. Trust that God will do the things He has said.

Faith isn’t a magical formula that happens when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It doesn’t mean that we never have doubts. Having faith means that when we have doubts, we choose to believe what God says instead of what our doubts say.

So when we have doubts, let’s look to the word of God for our confidence. Whatever your doubts might be, find a verse from the Bible that tells the truth about your situation. For example– sometimes I feel abandoned by God; I doubt that God is with me.

I can tell you three places in the Bible where God promises that He does not abandon His people (and I’m one of His people): Deuteronomy 31:6, Deuteronomy 31:8, and Hebrews 13:5.

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

So my prayer when I have this specific doubt goes like this: Lord, right now I feel like you have abandoned me. That is how I feel but Lord, I know that you have not abandoned me because your word says in Deuteronomy 31:8 that you will neither fail me nor abandon me. So right now Lord, I choose to believe what your word says even though I do not feel that way. I choose to believe that you have not and will not abandon me and I thank you that your word is true. Amen.

Choose today… choose to have faith!

Hebrews 11:1 – Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
